Karolinska University Hospital

Karolinska University Hospital is one of Europe’s largest university hospitals, with two sites, one in Huddinge and one in Solna. The Karolinska University Hospital was born when well-renowned Huddinge universitetsjukhus and Karolinska sjukhuset were merged into one hospital in 2004, and is responsible for highly specialized health care within the Stockholm Regional Council.

As Region Stockholm’s university hospital, Karolinska University Hospital plays an important role in the global arena in order to create international opportunities in highly specialized healthcare. As a global player in care, education, and research, Karolinska would not be where it is today without our many national and international collaborations. The promotion of international exchange is also an essential contribution to Karolinska’s vision to cure and relieve tomorrow, what no one can cure and relieve today. Highly specialized care covers the most complex disorders as well as seriously ill and injured patients. The care provided at Karolinska University Hospital is organized based on medical theme areas and a number of functions. Thematic care puts the patient’s collective medical needs into even greater focus.

Research is one of Karolinska’s core missions, with a focus on patient-oriented clinical research. Together with our partner university, Karolinska Institute, we are in the forefront of clinical development. We promote integration of research and innovation in health care for the benefit of our patients, and research is carried out in the care units at the hospital and in research facilities on the hospital premises. Some of the world’s foremost medical discoveries have been invented at Karolinska throughout the years, and together with Karolinska Institutet, the hospital forms a medical center with a tremendous international reputation.
